How often should I have my dog groomed?

This will depend on your ability to maintain you dog at home, we have people who bring their dog weekly at a significantly cheaper rate so that they are required to do very little between visits others fortnightly, three weekly, monthly and so on. For a single coated dog such as maltese, shihtzu, poodle etc a good rule of thumb is 6 weeks and under, this keeps the dog from becoming unruly and the coat growing out of control. Of course many people opt for a longer span of time and prefer to keep their dog with a shorter clip. Some people are also fantastic at keeping their dog without any knots and mats so the coat is requiring shaping and styling and they have the luxury of deciding how little or often to get the dog groomed.

My dog has a double coated how often for this type of coated breed?

Dogs such as Samoyeds, Collies, Shepards and indeed Labradors etc are certainly in the higher maintenance bracket, in as much as they can not be left for any period of time without matting. These types of breeds, benefit best by being groomed correctly every four weeks but still requires grooming from its owners in between times. Labradors shed coat all year around and although they will not matt, it certainly makes for a frustrating time trying to keep the dead hair off furnishings etc so they also do well from being stripped of the dead coat 4 weekly

Should I feed my dog before he or she comes to the Salon?

Unless your dog has health reasons requiring feeding we ask you not to feed the dog until he returns home, lots of dogs get exited or nervous on coming to a salon and a full tummy has the same affect as it does when the dog travels in the car. So we ask you to hold off till you dog comes home or if this seems unlikely just a small treat would do the trick.

What should I bring with me?

We ask you to bring your dog on a lead but we will transfer it over to one of ours, we don't hold collars leads or discs in the shop, on your return bring back your lead and we will transfer it back. Also try to walk and toilet you dog before it comes to the salon and if this is something you are unable to factor in time wise Please let us know and we will take them out side to toilet.

Also do not wash your dog or take it for a swim, it is very difficult for us to cut a wet coat and we will have to wait for the coat to dry or blow dry it before preceding so a nice dry coat is far better.

My dog has skin problems what do you advice?

Your local vet of course has the last word on skin problems but from my experience I have found that skin allergies respond best to a shampoo specifically chosen for the dogs particular allergens and you may bring your own shampoo with you.

You may also wish to talk to your vet about diet as many dogs react to preservatives and additives in the food.

We sell shampoo for sensitive skin either by the wash or the bottle if your unsure.

I have also found through my vets advice that a dog with skin allergies will often become more itchy if he or she gets hot so a shorter coat means the dog will not over heat and it makes it easier for the shampoo to make full contact with the skin. A lot of skin problems for dogs just never really go away but regular bathing and keeping the dog clean and a good treatment for the skin will definitely help alleviate the symptoms but again the last word on skin problems goes to your vet.
