Frequently Asked Questions
Feeding Your Rottweiler
Young Adolescent - Adult
I feed twice a day. Their two meals consist of:
- Morning
- Chicken Carcasses or Chicken Necks or Chicken Wings
- Mutton Flaps
- Bones – meaty ones they can chew up and digest
- Liver
- Steak/Beef Mince fatty (only if needed)
- Evening
- Pet Mince
- Sardines or a small amount of Mackerel with oil (at least a couple of times a week)
- **Pasta/Rice Vegie mix
- Egg (whole shell and all – every second - third day)
***All meat is fed raw - Do not cook the meat as this takes out all the nutrients & vitamins necessary for your dog****
Never give your dog cooked bones of any sort
**The Rice/pasta vegie mix I cook up in a large stainless steel bowl with a bit of vegemite or any left over vegies or scraps put in – sometimes a can of baked beans. This keeps in the fridge for at least 5 -6 days.
I only use dry food sparingly and when I do I use a natural one that is rice based with no artificial colours and preservatives.
If your dog has dry skin you can give fish oil tablets and/or flaxseed tablets also try increasing the amount of mutton/lamb fat in the diet.
To tell the condition of your dog when looking down from directly above your dog you should be able to see the nice tuck in after the ribs. The stomach should never be wider than the shoulders or head. When looking at and feeling the chest of your dog it should be tight and not loose and flabby and should not hang past the level of the elbows of your dog. Side on you should be able to see a slight tuck into the stomach behind where the last rib should be. You should be able to feel the last rib without to much pressure.
Unfortunately if Rottweilers are overfed the fat goes straight around their hearts and they can easily die of heart disease so a lean Rottweiler is better than a fat Rottweiler.
Remember natural is better
- Other Foods
- Natural Yoghurt (with acidophilus & bifidous)
- Vegetables - either cut up yourself, use scraps or peels left over or you can buy the cheap - puppies love to play and chew on carrots, apples and potatoes - just make sure they are washed first.
- Natural Yoghurt is excellent for any stomach problems, the runs etc. I buy Yoplait Plus 1 kg (which is available in most supermarkets) and give my puppies 1-2 tablespoons with each meal. (They also like a bowl of this as a special treat.
