Directors Hugh Gent OAM and Elizabeth Gent

"Gunnislake " was established in 1963 when Elizabeth purchased her foundation bitch from Harry Scott of Lindhills Kennels. Since then her carefully planned breeding program has seen her become a respected breeder and exhibitor at the highest levels, having bred or owned more than 40 Champions.

Hugh has been President of the Australian National Kennel Council since 1998 and is a Past President and Life Member of the Royal NSW Canine Council (Dogs NSW). A Life Member and President of the Labrador Retriever Club of NSW since 1990, he was the inaugural Chairman of the National Labrador Breed Council. He is Deputy Chair of the Companion Animals Sector of the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy (AAWS) a Federal Government initiative. He also represents the ANKC on the Australian Companion Animal Council. In 2008 he was awarded an OAM for his service to Canine Activities.

He is an International All Breeds Judge having judged extensively in Australia, New Zealand Asia and Europe.

Our Breeding Program

Since commencing breeding, our program has been based on a careful blend of English and Australian bloodlines. Our foundation bitch Lindhills Khoylah (1963) was a Grandaughter of Eng.Ch.Sandylands Tweed of Blaircourt and in the early years well known bloodlines such as Sandylands, Diant, Zelstone, Mallardhurn, Landyke, Kinley, Knaith and Poolstead could be found in our pedigrees.

After having had the benefit of using dogs imported by other breeders, in 1985 we imported our first English dog. On a visit to Marjorie Satterthwaite of Lawnwood Kennels, Elizabeth fell in love with a chocolate puppy who was rolling around in the snow. 12 months later after much persuasion, Lawnwoods Kapitan arrived in Quarantine. He quickly gained his Championship and was to have a great influence on the quality of chocolates in Australia.Since then we have continued to import English dogs and semen to enhance our breeding program.

Hereditable Diseases

In the forty seven years since our kennels were established our policy has been to use only sound, healthly breeding stock with the aim being to produce puppies with a reduced risk of them developing any of the hereditable diseasest that are asociated with the Labrador and many other breeds.

When the joint AVA / Labrador Retriever Club of NSW Hip Dysplasia Scheme commenced in 1969 all the dogs that were owned by us at that time were submitted for x-ray and diagnosis.Since that time we have consistently screened all of our breeding stock and all of our x-rays are processed through the ANKC / AVA Hip & Elbow Dysplasia Scheme.

All of our breeding stock are tested DNA clear for PRA and have annual eye examinations.
